Okay by this point most everybody knows what a sea shanty is, right? The sailing songs, of a certain specific structure - the call and the answer. The call varies, that’s the part that mainly tells the story of the song, and the chorus answers, and the answer of the chorus repeats the same. The whole purpose of the structure is that only one person present needs to even know the song or the full lyrics, and whoever else is present only needs to hear the answer’s words and melody once or twice in order to join the chorus.
The shanties are generally pretty simple, they’re more about singing along than trying to tell an epic tale. The themes of the lyrics are generally fairly ordinary, of everyday nautical life, marine wildlife, or just some one random particular dude whose name goes well into the rythm. The structure remains the same - you need one who knows the call, and the chorus answers. Allow me to demonstrate, let me start with the call:

fuck it, i never ever do those “reblog for X, this one really works!” posts, but this one doesn’t have any of that BS, this is just straight up wishing us good things; and then the comment doesn’t even say any of that either. Zero claims on this post, all positive vibes

“A ship can never truly love an anchor.” dude shut up. a ship without an anchor gets dashed against the rocks. it’s useless, completely at the whim of the currents. a ship loves an anchor so much it carries it everywhere it goes. the anchor gives the ship the world to love. dude.
DUDE DON’T YOU DO THIS TO ME

i love when a character has something terrible happen to them and as a result they see themself as, essentially if not literally, a ghost. and so that means they only can (and have to) do what ghosts do, ie get revenge and then cease to exist. easy as that. but then halfway through this ghost vengeance they realize hey actually i might still be a human person. with human needs. that’s incredibly inconvenient, considering how much i’ve invested in this whole ghost thing
